Week 1 - "Methods and Applications of High Resolution Neutron Spectroscopy and Small Angle Neutron Scattering" - June 12 to June 16, 2011

Week 2 - “Methods and Applications of Cold and Thermal Neutron Spectroscopy” - June 19 to June 23, 2011

The seventeenth annual NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) Summer School on Methods and Applications of Neutron Scattering will be held in two sections in June 2011.

Please note this years schools will be conducted during a facility shutdown, thus all experiments will be simulated.

Section 1 will run from Sunday June 12 to Thursday June 16 and will cover Neutron Spectroscopy and Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) techniques for studying soft condensed matter. Instruments utilized in Section 1 will include the NG3 30m SANS, NG7 30m SANS, Neutron Spin Echo and High Flux Backscattering.

Section 2 will run from Sunday June 19 to Thursday June 23 and will cover neutron spectroscopy techniques for studying hard condensed matter. Instruments utilized in Section 2 will include SPINS, MACS, BT-7 Triple Axis and Disk Chopper Spectrometers.

Applicants have the option of applying for one or both sections and applications will be considered for each section individually.

The course is targeted at those with little or no previous experience with neutron scattering methods. The combination of introductory lectures and training in scattering techniques will provide participants with a unique opportunity to become familiar with neutron scattering methods and their application to current research topics.

Attendance for the summer school is limited to 32 students and to people affiliated with US universities and US industry.

The Summer School is sponsored by the NCNR and by the National Science Foundation under the Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRNS) cooperative agreement DMR-0944772. There is a $100 registration fee. Transportation and lodging are not paid for, but financial support for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty may be requested on the summer school application form.
