60 years neutrons at Garching - what's new?

Winfried Petry (Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) and Physics Department, Technical University of Munich)

Garching is the place where the young Federal Republic of Germany was allowed to install its first neutron source within Eisenhower initiative of "Atoms for Peace" and will remain the place to deliver brilliant neutron beams for the coming decencies. Garching is also the place where forward-looking neutron instrumentation has been invented such as neutron guides, neutron small angle scattering, backscattering, UCN turbines, neutron-resonant-spin-echo, ...
Today neutron sciences at Garching gives answers to the grand societal challenges of modern society. Examples about research on energy materials, topological matter, high Tc materials, protein-crystallography, key technologies for industry and medicine will elucidate this.
Last not least we will demonstrate how university and large scale facility create synergies.
