Slimy and Broken: The Art of Biophysics

Recent advances and applications in biomolecular NMR: NMR has made great progress in the last 10 years in its application to biological problems and in technical developments. As an example, our recent work on poly(A) binding protein (PABP) will be presented [Pubmed: 11287632]. PABP is involved with the stabilization and transfer of genetic information in the form of mRNA into protein. I will also talk about new developments in the application of heteronuclear residual dipolar couplings (RDC) to protein 3D structure determination. RDC's are a new type of information that can be used to determine protein secondary structure, the arrangement of multisubunit complexes, and applied to structural genomics. Lastly, a new methodology for measuring RDC's is proposed involving magic-angle rotation of a single alignment domain liquid crystal [Pubmed: 11885983].
