W3-A2: Breakout session on Use of Depleted U Targets at Low and Medium Power Spallation Source

Jim Rhyne (LANL/LANSCE) and Ray Teller (ANL/IPNS)

The development of cubic uranium metallic phases creates the possibility of the use of these materials in medium power spallation neutron sources allowing an increase of perhaps 70-80% in neutron production per proton. The purpose of this session is to 1) present the case of the use of these materials, 2) to assess the interest within the community to develop a new generation of U targets, and 3) initiate a discussion about the issues that would arise should such a development be deemed worthwhile.
