The Instrument

We currently use a high resolution (0.1 cm-1) Nicolet Nexus 670 that is flexible in both its current iteration and is upgradeable for future needs. The optics are fully optimized and computer controlled for ease of use. Changing spectral range is as easy as removing an optical component and placing the new one into its position. The software automatically updates ranges, sensitivity and parameters. Some of this is sensitive, so for first time users we ask that they approach us for a quick run through, especially if optics are to be switched out. The main components are listed below with the available options.

Source

Everglo (gives good/fair intensity over all of the wavelengths of interest to us.)

Beam splitters

KBr
Far-ir

Detectors

DTGS with KBr (12,000 cm-1 to 350 cm-1) or polyethylene (700 cm-1 to ~10 cm-1) windows
MCTA liguid nitrogen cooled for high sensitivity (11,700 cm-1 to 600 cm-1).

Purge

The spectrometer is continuously purged with dried, CO2 free air.

Econo-mount

Econo-mount
A holder designed to reproducibly position the Econo-Press, Econo-Cell, Econo-Gas Cell, infrared quartz cylindrical cuvettes or various sized windows in the sample beam .

Magnetic film holder

Magnetic film holder
The Magnetic Film Holder is used to hold thin film strips in position for spectral analysis. The holder uses magnetic rubber strips to secure the sample to the back plate.

Stock powders/mulls

Stock powders/mulls
We have KBr, nujol and fluorolube for mixing powders or creating mulls.

Stock powders/mulls

Econo-cards

These are holders with self-adhesive apertures for mounting KBr pellets, discs and films. Each 2" x 3" card is preprinted for recording data and installs in the FTIR slide mount.

Econopress

econopress
The Econo-Press is an economical die used to form 10 mm KBr pellets. Spectra can be obtained with the pellet in the press, or placed in an Econo-Card for analysis and storage.

Presslok demountable holder

Presslok demountable holder
Used with infrared windows, creates an easy-to-use transmission cell for analyses of mulls and smears.

Demountable pathlength Cell

demountable pathlength cell
An easy-to-use transmission cell for analyses of liquids, mulls, and films. Two Leur-Lok Teflon stoppered ports make filling and cleaning the cell simple and fast. To change the pathlength, simply substitute a spacer of the desired thickness. The windows are 32 mm in diameter.

Table Press Kit

Table Press Kit
Includes a 3 mm Die Set, which consists of an upper and lower anvil, six sample collars with a 3 mm aperture, a silicone ejector collar and a pellet holder. The pellets are pressed using light operator pressure and are placed in a collar that can be transferred onto the provided pellet holder for analysis.

100mm demountable gas cell

100mm demountable gas cell
The cells are constructed of Pyrex and use standard 32 mm windows. Each cell slides into a protective aluminum sleeve holder, which fits into the standard slide mount in the spectrometer’s sample compartment.

Quartz cuvette cells

Quartz cuvette cells
Rectangular cells with 10mm pathlength and holder.

Diffuse reflectance

Nicolet Nexus 670
The Smart Diffuse Reflectance allows samples to be analyzed as is, with a slight amount of grinding or by grinding and mixing with potassium bromide. Diffuse reflectance provides non-destructive analysis for a wide variety of samples. The DRIFTS technique can also be used in conjunction with silicon carbide paper for large intractable surfaces.

Model HC-32 Heated/Cooled Demountable Cell Kit

Demountable Cell Kit
The Model HC-32 Heated/Cooled Demountable Cell Kit is used in conjunction with a recirculating bath for heating and cooling applications. The temperature range is determined by the recirculating bath, and a separate temperature controller is not required for operation of this cell.

Smart Orbit Accessory

Smart Orbit Accessory
The Smart Orbit accessory is a high-performance diamond single-bounce ATR accessory. This accessory offers users the many advantages of diamond ATR technology including the ability to analyze hard, abrasive, or caustic materials. It uses a real Type IIA diamond for ruggedness and versatility.
