Summer School on the Fundamentals of Neutron Scattering

NIST Center for Neutron Research
National Institute of Standards and Technology
Gaithersburg, MD 20899

June 18-23, 2012

The eighteenth annual NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) "Summer School on Methods and Applications of Small Angle Neutron Scattering, Neutron Reflectivity and Spin Echo" will be held from Monday, June 18 to Saturday, June 23. This year's summer school is devoted to methods and applications of small angle neutron scattering (SANS), neutron reflectometry (NR) and neutron spin echo (NSE) techniques. Other spectroscopy instruments will not be included.

The course is targeted at those with little or no previous experience with neutron scattering methods. The combination of introductory lectures and training in scattering techniques will provide participants with a unique opportunity to become familiar with neutron scattering methods and their application to current research topics.

Attendance for the summer school is limited to 32 students and to people affiliated with US universities and US industry.

The Summer School is sponsored by the NCNR and by the National Science Foundation under the Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRNS) cooperative agreement number DMR-0944772. There is a $100 registration fee. Transportation and lodging are not paid for, but financial support for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty may be requested on the summer school application form.

Five instruments will be featured in this year’s summer school, 3 SANS instruments, 1 NR instrument and 1 NSE spectrometer. The SANS instruments featured will be the NG3 30 meter SANS, NG7 30 meter SANS and BT5 USANS. The NR instrument featured will be the "liquid" NG7 Horizontal Sample NR and our Spin Echo NSE instrument NG5 - NSE will be featured.

Immediately following the summer school, the American Conference on Neutron Scattering will be held at Georgetown University, Washington, DC from June 24-28, 2012. Students participating in the Summer School will be eligible for subsidized housing, reimbursement of the registration fee, and bus transportation to the conference if they submit an abstract. The abstract deadline is April 2nd. For additional information, refer to the conference website.
