Using the state-of-the-art first-principles structure and electronic calculations combined with neutron scattering measurement techniques, we investigate:

  • Possible novel phases of nanotubes under high pressures

  • Band gap engineering by reversible deformation

  • Tunable adsorption on nanotubes by elliptic deformation

  • Functionalization and metal coating of nanotubes

  • Dynamics of species in nanotubes; ``H2 in SWNT''
