Spin Dynamics

We have worked on the spin dynamics of a wide variety of materials.  One focus area has been on isotropic ferromagnets, which indicates that (ideally) it takes no energy to rotate the entire spin system.  This basic property is found in a remarkable number of systems, including itinerant electron systems like iron and nickel, Invar ferromagnets, "soft" amorphous materials like metglas, and colossal magnetoresisitve systems like La-CaMnO3.  We have also worked on heavy fermion systems, and the spin dynamics of superconducting materials.

 

Isotropic Ferromagnets

We have a longstanding interest in the properties of isotropic ferromagnets.  The key physical property of an isotropic ferromagnet is that it takes no energy to uniformly rotate the entire spin system.  This uniform rotation corresponds to a spin wave excitation of infinite wavelength, or wave vector q=2π/wavelength=0. This implies that the excitations obey the Goldstone theorem, in that the dispersion relation E(q) for the excitations must approach zero as q goes to zero:  E(q→0)→0.
