The Neutron Source - It's a REACTOR!
Robert Williams (NIST Center for Neutron Research)
The National Bureau of Standards Reactor, the NBSR, was built at the time NBS was moving into rural Montgomery County from the old cramped campus on Connecticut Avenue NW. Its many unique features have allowed the NCNR to become one of the world's most productive neutron scattering facilities, particularly in the field of cold neutron research. How did we get here? How does the thing work? A brief history of the NBSR will be presented, along with a description of the reactor, the fuel cycle, normal operations and abnormal events.
