Condensation of bosons and fermions in spin chains and ladders
Oleg Tchernyshyov, Johns Hopkins University
I will discuss quantum phase transitions between magnetization plateaus and canted magnetic states observable in spin chains and ladders placed in a strong magnetic field. It is well known that the transition from an integer plateau is similar to the condensation of interacting bosons. A transition from a fractional plateau generally lies in a different universality class. The differences are revealed in the presence of small anisotropies and asymmetries that are often present in real magnetic materials.
