A Neutron Scattering Investigation of the Crystalline Structure of Ettringite with In Situ Observation of Its Formation and Thermal Decomposition

Mike Hartman, NCNR

Ettringite, Ca6[Al(OH)6]2(SO4)3.26H2O, is an important hydration product during the initial hydration stages of Portland cement, and it has also been linked to degradation mechanisms in mature cement pastes. The structure of Ettringite, as determined by a recent neutron scattering investigation, will be presented. In situ measurements of the evolution of the Ettringite crystalline structure during formation and thermal decomposition will be discussed in relation to prior measurements of these processes.
