Polarized Neutron Reflectometry in specular and off-specular mode: some results looking at magnetic thin films and interfaces

Dr. Saibal Basu, SUNY Stonybrook

The talk will focus on the results obtained from a polarized neutron reflectometer for vertical samples, that has been installed at the reactor DHRUVA at BARC, Trombay, India. This reactor has peak flux of 1.4 × 1014 n/cm2/s and has two curved neutron guides. The present reflectometer is on one of the guides, using a monochromatic beam of 2.5 Å. We have determined physical density profiles as well as magnetic moment density profiles using this reflectometer for several magnetic/non-magnetic viz., Fe/Ge and Cu/Ni multilayer samples. These results will be presented. Since this reflectometer uses a horizontal PSD that collects all data in the plane of reflection, we can also carry out off-specular reflectivity studies quite conveniently. Some interesting results from unpolarized and polarized off-specular reflectivity will also be presented.
