MEMORANDUM FOR All Occupants of Building 235

Subject:    Safety Reminder

I would like to remind all staff of three safety issues related to recent occurences.

  1. If a chemical spill or other emergency occurs, call the emergency number, x2222, immediately. After doing so, please notify the control room (page phone or x6292). The fire department will notify the safety office for any aid in cleaning up chemical spills
  2. The caps to waste bottles should not be fully tightened, in order to allow gas products which may be evolved to escape from the container. There have been two recent events where waste bottles burst from the buildup of evolved gas products, producing acid spills. The lid should be put on the container 1-2 turns, but not fully tightened.
  3. There are many different types of nylon reinforced tubing in this building (Tygon, silicone ...). They are not all the same - they have widely varying temperature and pressure limitations. Do not assume that any tubing is suitable for a particular application without consulting catalogues or data books for ratings (note that the domestic water supply is maintained at or about 90 psi).

Please help us to avoid future problems by paying careful attention to the above points.
