Perfect Crystal Diffractometer for Ultra Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

Sample Enviroment:

There is a choice of two sample locations: (i) a computer-controlled translation stage to mount multi-position sample holders, and (ii) a 600 mm diameter sample table, identical to that found on the 30m-SANS instruments, to accommodate large pieces of apparatus, such as electromagnets, cryostats, furnaces, or shear cells. Multi-specimen sample holders with temperature control (-10°C to 200°C) are available. The sample table consists of a Huber stage with a computer-controlled rotation.

Sample Cells:

Using the appropriate insert, both the smaller 30m-SANS and NSE Spin Echo cells can fit into the USANS two-position titanium electrical heating sample holder. The holder has the temperature range of 40 C to 400 C.

For lower temperatures (-10 C to 60 C), the spare 30m-SANS seven position thermostatting fluid sample holder is used. (Due to the limited range of motion of the USANS sample translation slide, only three of the seven positions can be used.) This holder only accepts the smaller 30m-SANS (35.6 mm wide) sample cells.

Dimensions of demountable titanium cells for holding liquid samples:

Item30m-SANSUSANS
outer width35.6 mm (1.40")101.6 mm (4.00")
outer height43.2 mm (1.70")101.6 mm (4.00")
inner fill diameter19.1 mm (0.75")50.8 mm (2.00")
Sample aperture diameter15.9 mm (0.62")44.5 mm (1.75")
Beam Intensity25,000 s-157,000 s-1
Available sample thickness1, 2, 4, 10 mm1, 2, 5, 10 mm
Cell Volume per mm thickness0.29 ml / mm2.03 ml / mm

Optimum Sample Thickness:

Two mm thick samples are ideal for light water (H2O) samples, producing a transmission of T = 0.41. Ten mm thick samples are ideal for heavy water (D2O) samples, producing a transmission of T = 0.58. In addition, the USANS cells use two 3.2 mm thick quartz windows, having a combined transmission of T = 0.89.
