There are two types of single crystal sample holders available at NIST; NIST holders and Brookhaven holders. These sample holders are generally used in experiments that have single crystals that need to have a specific orientation in the beamline. They come with 4 parts; sample mount, a goniometer, can lid, and sample can. All the parts are made from aluminum.
Can Type | Sample Volume (cm3) | Inner Dimensions (mm(in)) | Drawing (PDF) |
---|---|---|---|
NIST Holder | 152 | 50.8(2.00)Ø x 75(2.95) | NIST 14-0244 |
Brookhaven Holder | 120 | 47.6(1.87)Ø x 67(2.64) | Available on Request |

Sample Holder Assembly
To assemble the can place you single crystal in the sample mount. Using a 4-40 aluminum screw clamp the sample mount to the goniometer. Using a 4-40 aluminum screw, clamp the goniometer onto the can lid in the orientation needed for the experiment. Finally using 4-40 aluminum screws, attach the Brookhaven can lid to the sample can. If you need a helium environment, use the glove box located in the high bay (B-128). To check out a Brookhaven sample can, please contact a member of the user services team.
